How to Build a Kayak Cart for Less Than $30

Updated: May 22, 2019

Hey DIYers! Today I’m going to show you how to quickly build a PVC Kayak Cart.

YouTube video is here, otherwise follow the written directions below!

I’ve taken my kayak out on the water about a dozen times now using this kayak cart and the PVC, paint, and wheels have held up extremely well through the rough conditions.

This entire project only costs about $30 to do as well! Let’s go build one.

Materials:

A Kayak! Here is the exact 10ft Kayak I bought - Lifetime Kayak

2 Wheels – I used rubber wheels, but you can use plastic lawn mower wheels as well. Just make sure the holes will fit the rod you use for an axle

1 Threaded Rod – Mine is 5/8” so all my hardware will be 5/8” as well

4 Flat Washers

2 Lock Washers

2 Hex Nuts

2 Lock Nuts

7 PVC Caps – All my PVC is 3/4”

7 PVC “T”

8’ PVC Tube

Pool Noodle

PVC Cuts:

1 – 18”

1 – 10 ½”

4 – 8”

2 – 4 ½”

2 – 1 ¾”

4 – 3”

Once you have all your cuts, you’ll want to start by drilling a 5/8” hole into 2 of the caps. This will be where the threaded rod will sit.

Section 1: Mid Section

Start by gluing 2 of the T’s to the end of the 10.5” piece of PVC. Have the middle part of the T going into the 10.5”. You will now have an H shape.

Section 2: Top Braces

Then glue the 8” pieces to the ends of a new T, with a 3” piece glued to the middle part of that T. Do this twice (this is the top section that holds the kayak).

Section 3: Bottom PVC Axle Casing

Start with a cap with a hole in it. Glue that to the 1 ¾” piece. Glue that into the side of a T. Glue the opposite end of the T to a 4 ½” piece. Glue that 4 ½” piece to the side of another T. Make sure this new T is now facing out. Finish the rest of this section the way you started. 4 ½” > T > 1 ¾” > Cap with hole.

Sections 2 connects to the top of section 1. Section 3 (axle) connects to the bottom of Section 1.

Then you’re ready to paint this bad boy. That’s how easy this thing is! I sanded my PVC a little to give it some texture for the spray paint to stick to. I then gave the cart a second coat of clear coat protective paint so it’ll keep looking good for a few years.

Putting the Axle together:

Lock Nut > Flat Washer > Wheel > Flat Washer > Hex Nut > Lock Nut > PVC Cart

Now repeat for the other side.

Finishing Touches:

Cut the pool noodles long enough to cover the 8” PVC at the top of the cart. Slide the noodles over the PVC and then cap off those tubes with the remaining 4 caps. This will help hold the noodles onto the cart. Do not glue these so you can replace the noodles as they fall apart in the future (or change colors).

The handle is made from the 18” PVC tube. Connect this to the bottom axle hole and then put a cap on the end of that. You are now all good to go!
