How to Install a Fluorescent Light - DIY

In part of my 3 minute tutorial series, I have finished taking down my old garage work light and installed this new fluorescent light. Now you're probably asking why I didn't go with an LED light, and that's because I already had these bulbs (which can be expensive) and this won't be my primary light.

Installing an LED light will be the same identical steps.

To begin any electrical project, you're going to want to turn off the breaker switch that feeds the lights. Then test the current with a voltage tester, just for extra safety.

Next, go ahead and disconnect your current fixture by untwisting the black, white, and copper grounding wire.

Black wire = power

White = neutral

Copper = grounding

Then just unscrew the fixture from the ceiling and you'll be ready to put up the new one.

You're going to want to begin by preparing the new light fixture. Go ahead and pop out the knockout hole in the center of the fixture, it should be about 1" in diameter and you can pop this out with a screw driver in a hammer. Then slip in a cable connector (optional but recommended).

Now you're ready for install.

Have some screws and a screwdriver ready, otherwise you'll be stuck holding this thing in the air for a while. Start by pushing the wire from the ceiling into the knockout hole. Then place a screw into the fixture towards to ceiling, ideally somewhere near where the cables come out so you can twist the fixture to make it as straight as you want.

Once secure, fasten more screws throughout the fixture. You want to fasten this thing into a joist in the ceiling, otherwise, mark where the holes are at and take the fixture off and insert sheetrock screws first.

All that's left to do is the wiring. Connect the black wire to black wire, white to white, and copper to the grounding screw. Connect these wires with wire nuts and use electrical tape if you want to really go above and beyond.

After that, just put on the wire cover plate, insert the lightbulbs, and put the cover on.

Switch on the breaker, switch on the light, and enjoy being able to see again!
